Kathleen's greatest joy is teaching and mentoring. She loves having people in the lab, everyone from high school interns to postdocs. Kathleen loves seeing where these people go after her time with them. She learns as much as she teaches and mentors.
The bread and butter of Kathleen's career is research. She loves having kids come to participate in research. She has learned so much from them. Kathleen also loves analyzing data to understand the outcomes of research projects.
Kathleen enjoys having the opportunity to speak in conference lectures and panels. VERY few academic scientists have speech impairments like Kathleen's. She is so grateful to those who gave her time and space to speak, especially when MBC made speaking even more difficult.
Kathleen's position gave her the opportunity to serve as a grant reviewer, research publication reviewer, committee member, student evaluator, advisory board member, and more. Early on in life, Kathleen learned the importance of service, through her parents. Kathleen continues to serve, as a grant reviewer for METAvivor, leader with Survivingbreastcancer.org, and trained patient advocate.
Kathleen and her lab's work have been celebrated by the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, American Academy of CP and Developmental Medicine, and more. Her favorite award is a "Pioneering Women in Technology" award by the Westchester County Association. Another awardee that day was Dr. Chau Dang, who became Kathleen's oncologist four years later. That award has extended Kathleen's life, through Dr. Dang's expertise.
